The Diamondback

May 2023

Over four months, The Diamondback reporter Winter Hawk explored how international students address mental health.

Hawk interviewed 11 students born abroad and who are currently or recently enrolled at the University of Maryland, as well as 11 experts based in or working on mental health programs and research in each country.

Student interviews dissected how cultural norms and government intervention influenced their mental health journeys and formed their understanding of how to approach mental health topics. Multiple experts helped contextualize student experiences and highlight the current nature of mental health stigma, diagnosis and treatment in these countries.

This piece addresses how Prince George's County Public Schools sought to mediate challenges in student transportation while scrambling to hire bus drivers. Meanwhile, parents discuss the difficulties of waiting in long carpool lines.

I wrote this piece during my reporting internship at the Hyattsville Life & Times. To collect information, I conducted multiple interviews with the county's public schools spokesperson as well as man-on-the-street interviews with concerned parents and children waiting in carpool lines. This piece provides an example of my extensive interviewing experience while also showing how I integrate quotes with supplemental research.

This story addresses how residents in Prince George's County feared eviction during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, Prince George's County ranked the highest among Maryland counties helping renters. Yet, city councilmembers in Hyattsville, Prince George's County sought to do more to assist tenants.

This story was written for the Hyattsville Life & Times during my reporting internship, however, this link displays the story on a webpage I coded in HTML and CSS with corresponding graphs created in Datawrapper. The story itself illustrates the range of interviews and research I completed to provide a comprehensive look at evictions in the county. Meanwhile, the website showcases my front-end coding experience, which I honed in two journalism coding courses over the past three years.
