This collection of photos features a range of terrains from the marshlands of parks just beyond the Serengeti National Park to the Ngorongoro crater region within the Serengeti. In the footprint of the Ngorongoro crater, a volcanic mountain is believed to have once towered over Mount Kilimanjaro. The volcano's eruption and subsequent collapse hallowed out the Earth's surface where it once stood, creating a separate ecosystem within the crater, and sending waves of ash for miles, leaving the neighboring grasslands relatively empty aside from a scattering of Acacia trees. For this reason, our guide explained, the land was called the Serengeti, or "endless plains."
